Market Risk Overview
Market Risk is the real-time risk and PnL workspace in Rival Risk. Use it to monitor exposure across the firm hierarchy, filter to the books and products that matter, open distribution charts, and jump into alert workflows when something needs attention.
This article is the starting point for Market Risk. For a side-by-side comparison of the four hierarchy views, see Market Risk Views. For shared grid controls (sort, filter, columns, export), see Working with Grids.
What Market Risk shows
Market Risk displays live profit-and-loss and risk measures and lets you drill down through your firm’s hierarchy (for example, office → account → category, or trading group → portfolio → underlying).
Typical uses:
- Monitor firm-wide or desk-level risk during the trading day
- Drill into a book, account, or symbol that is out of line
- Filter and sort key risk columns
- Review distributions in the chart panel
- Create an alert from numeric filters when a condition should be watched continuously

Open Market Risk
1. In the left sidebar, expand Market Risk.
2. Choose a view:
- By Office
- By Master
- By Portfolio
- By Symbol
You can also switch views from the top-bar Settings menu while you are already on a Market Risk page. Look for the Market Risk dropdown (it lists the hierarchy names, such as Master / Account / Category).
> Tip: Enable Open navigation links in new tab in Settings if you want multiple Market Risk views open at once. See [Navigation](#).
> Screenshot: Market Risk submenu with all four views.
Choose the right view
Each Market Risk view uses a different hierarchy. Pick the view that matches how you think about the book:
| Sidebar label | Hierarchy | Best when you want to… |
|---|---|---|
| By Office | Master / Account / Category | Work by office/master structure and product category |
| By Master | Master Account / Trading Group / Portfolio | Start from master account and drill into groups/portfolios |
| By Portfolio | Trading Group / Portfolio / Underlying | Work portfolio-centric risk down to underlyings |
| By Symbol | Underlying / Expiry / OSI | Analyze risk by symbol, expiry, and option series |
Some tools are only available in certain views (for example, Office / Product filters on By Office, or Custom Category / Account Settings on By Portfolio and By Master). Details are in [Market Risk Views](#).

Page layout
A Market Risk page typically includes:
1. Top bar — Rival logo, page title, Settings, Popout
2. Sidebar — Market Risk views and other app areas
3. Page toolbar — tabs (when available), Quick filter, view-specific filters, filter badge, chart toggle, paging
4. Main grid — frozen hierarchy columns + scrollable risk/PnL columns
5. Chart panel (optional) — distribution charts on the right when toggled open
While the page is loading column definitions or reconnecting, a wait overlay may appear over the grid. Wait until it clears before interacting.
Connection status is shown at the bottom of the sidebar (**Connected**, Connecting…, Disconnected, or Connection Failed - Check Server). Live updates require Connected.

Work with the grid
Market Risk uses the standard Rival Risk grid. In short:
| Task | Action |
|---|---|
| Sort | Click a column header |
| Filter | Click the filter icon in a column header → Apply |
| Show/hide columns | Right-click → Column Chooser |
| Resize / reorder | Drag column edges or headers |
| Export | Right-click → Export Grid Data |
| Clear filters | Use the filter badge X |

Quick filter
Use the toolbar Quick filter box for fast text filters, for example:
- Category = S&P
Steps:
1. Type a simple filter phrase.
2. Click Search (or press Enter).
3. Clear the quick filter when you are done exploring.
For multi-value lists or numeric ranges (less than, greater than, between, outside), use the column filter popup instead.

Tabs
When tabs are available on your Market Risk page, the toolbar shows a tab bar so you can keep multiple named contexts in the same window.
Typical tab actions:
- Select a tab to switch context
- Create a new tab
- Rename a tab
- Delete a tab
- Reorder tabs by dragging
Use tabs when you want several saved focuses without opening extra browser windows.

Office and Product filters (By Office)
On By Office, the toolbar includes:
- Office — include one or more offices (or All)
- Product — include one or more product categories (or All)
- Update — apply the Office/Product selection (requires Connected)
Use Select All in each dropdown when you want the full set again.
These filters narrow the Market Risk universe before you drill into the grid. They are separate from per-column filters.

Filter badge and create alert
When column filters are active, a badge such as 2 Filters appears in the toolbar.
- Hover the badge to see a summary of the criteria.
- Click X to clear all column filters.
- If the active filters can seed an alert, an Alert button appears on the badge. Click it to open Alert Setup with a draft based on those numeric filters.
This is useful when a temporary grid filter should become an ongoing monitor.
> Screenshot: Filter badge with Alert action.
Chart panel
Click Toggle chart panel in the toolbar to open Distribution Charts beside the grid.
In the chart panel:
1. Choose Account / Group (which hierarchy column drives the series).
2. Choose a metric column.
3. Select a chart type (for example, scatter, histogram, or bar).
4. Review the distribution for the currently loaded/filtered grid data.
5. Close the panel when finished.
If Account/Group or metric is not selected, the panel prompts you to select them.
> Screenshot: Chart panel open with Account/Group, metric, and a chart visible.
Paging and trade timing
When paging is enabled for the view:
- Use Previous / Next or type a page number to move through result pages.
- You may also see Trades Last Received with a relative time (for example, how recently trade data was read).
If the grid looks incomplete, check that you are on the intended page and that filters are not hiding rows.

Context menu actions
Right-click a cell to open the radial/context menu. Common Market Risk actions include:
| Action | Use it to… |
|---|---|
| Column Chooser | Show or hide columns |
| Export Grid Data | Download the current grid data |
| Set Prices | Adjust prices for the selected context (when enabled) |
| Set Open Position | Adjust open position (when enabled) |
| Custom Category | Manage custom product/category mapping (supported views) |
| Account Settings | Manage account overlay settings (supported views) |
| Upload Positions | Upload position data (when enabled) |
| Configure Slide Column Data | Configure slide-related column data |
| Alert-related items | Jump into alert workflows from the current cell/context |
If Custom Category or Account Settings shows an error asking you to choose Portfolio or Underlying, right-click a cell in the correct hierarchy column and try again.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| Grid not updating | Check sidebar connection status; wait for Connected |
| No rows / empty results | Clear Quick filter and the filter badge; widen Office/Product; check paging |
| Wait overlay does not clear | Confirm connection; reload the page if needed |
| Cannot hide a column | Clear that column’s filter first; frozen columns cannot be hidden |
| Custom Category / Account Settings error | Right-click the Portfolio or Underlying column, as prompted |
| Chart is blank | Select Account / Group and a metric; ensure the grid has data |
