Market Risk Views

Edited

Rival Risk provides four Market Risk views. Each view shows the same live risk and PnL ideas, but organizes rows in a different hierarchy so you can drill down the way your desk works.

Use this article to choose the right view and understand which tools appear where. For day-to-day grid skills, see Market Risk Overview and Working with Grids.

Why there are multiple views

Risk can be rolled up many ways—by office, master account, portfolio, or symbol. Market Risk views are purpose-built hierarchies:

- Start broad (office / master) and drill into accounts or portfolios

- Start from a trading group and work down to underlyings

- Start from a symbol and inspect expiry and option series (OSI)

Switching views does not replace learning the grid—it changes the shape of the tree you navigate.

How to switch views

From the sidebar

1. Expand Market Risk.

2. Click one of:

   - By Office

   - By Master

   - By Portfolio

   - By Symbol

Sidebar order matches the list above.

From Settings

While you are already on a Market Risk page:

1. Open the top-bar Settings (gear).

2. Use the Market Risk dropdown.

3. Choose a hierarchy name (for example, Master / Account / Category).

Multiple windows

Turn on Open navigation links in new tab in Settings if you want two views side by side (for example, By Portfolio and By Symbol). See Navigation.

At-a-glance comparison

| Sidebar label | Hierarchy | Office / Product filters | Custom Category | Account Settings | Paging |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| By Office | Master / Account / Category | Yes | No | No | Yes |

| By Master | Master Account / Trading Group / Portfolio | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |

| By Portfolio | Trading Group / Portfolio / Underlying | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |

| By Symbol | Underlying / Expiry / OSI | No | No | No | Yes |

All four views share the core Market Risk toolkit: Quick filter, column filters, Column Chooser, export, chart panel, and (where enabled) tabs. See [Market Risk Overview](#).

By Office

Sidebar label: By Office

Hierarchy: Master / Account / Category

When to use it

Choose By Office when you monitor risk by office or master structure and need to narrow the universe by office and product category before drilling into accounts.

What makes it different

The toolbar includes:

- Office — select one or more offices, or All

- Product — select one or more product categories, or All

- Update — apply the Office/Product selection (requires Connected)

- Paging controls

- Trades Last Received (when trade timing is available)

Custom Category and Account Settings are not available in this view.

Typical workflow

1. Open Market Risk → By Office.

2. Set Office and Product, then click Update.

3. Expand Master → Account → Category as needed.

4. Filter or sort the risk columns you care about.

5. Open the chart panel for outliers.

By Master

Sidebar label: By Master

Hierarchy: Master Account / Trading Group / Portfolio

When to use it

Choose By Master when you start from a master account and need to inspect trading groups and portfolios underneath it.

What makes it different

- Hierarchy focuses on master → group → portfolio

- Custom Category available (right-click an Underlying cell when that column is in context—see notes below)

- Account Settings available (right-click a Portfolio cell)

- Paging supported

- No Office/Product toolbar filters

> Note on Custom Category / Account Settings: These context actions are tied to specific hierarchy columns. If you see a message asking you to choose Portfolio (for Account Overlay) or Underlying (for Custom Category), right-click the correct column and try again.

Typical workflow

1. Open Market Risk → By Master.

2. Expand the master account of interest.

3. Drill into trading group → portfolio.

4. Use Column Chooser to keep only the measures you need.

5. Use Account Settings or Custom Category when remapping is required.

By Portfolio

Sidebar label: By Portfolio

Hierarchy: Trading Group / Portfolio / Underlying

When to use it

Choose By Portfolio for portfolio-centric monitoring: start at trading group, open a portfolio, then drill to underlyings.

What makes it different

- Natural view for desk/portfolio risk managers

- Custom Category on Underlying

- Account Settings on Portfolio

- Paging supported

- No Office/Product toolbar filters

This is often the best companion view to By Symbol when you need both book structure and instrument detail.

Typical workflow

1. Open Market Risk → By Portfolio.

2. Expand Trading Group → Portfolio.

3. Filter to the portfolios you own.

4. Drill to Underlying for instrument-level risk.

5. Right-click Portfolio for Account Settings, or Underlying for Custom Category, when needed.

By Symbol

Sidebar label: By Symbol

Hierarchy: Underlying / Expiry / OSI

When to use it

Choose By Symbol when the question starts with a product—not a book. Use it to inspect risk by underlying, then expiry, then option series (OSI).

What makes it different

- Symbol-first hierarchy

- Strong for expiration and series-level review

- Custom Category, Account Settings, and Office/Product filters are not available

- Paging supported

Typical workflow

1. Open Market Risk → By Symbol.

2. Filter Quick filter or column filters to the underlying.

3. Expand Expiry → OSI.

4. Sort by the risk measure driving the investigation.

5. Export or open charts if you need a snapshot or distribution view.

Which view should I use?

| Question you’re asking | Start with |

|---|---|

| How is risk looking across offices / masters? | By Office |

| What’s under this master account? | By Master |

| How is this trading group / portfolio doing? | By Portfolio |

| What’s happening in this underlying or expiry? | By Symbol |

| I need office + product narrowing first | By Office |

| I need to edit account overlay or custom category | By Master or By Portfolio |

| I want portfolio structure and symbol detail together | Open By Portfolio and By Symbol in two windows |

There is no single “correct” view—many users keep two open during the day.

Tools available in every view

These work across Market Risk views (availability of data still depends on connection and permissions):

- Quick filter

- Column filters and filter badge

- Create alert from eligible numeric filters (filter badge Alert)

- Column Chooser, sort, resize, reorder

- Export Grid Data

- Distribution chart panel

- Paging

- Context/radial menu (exact items vary by view and column)

Shared how-to: [Working with Grids](#) and [Market Risk Overview](#).

View-specific tools (detail)

Office and Product filters

Views: By Office only

1. Open the Office dropdown and select offices (or Select All / All).

2. Open the Product dropdown and select categories.

3. Click Update.

4. Continue with normal grid filters if needed.

Custom Category

Views: By Master, By Portfolio

1. Right-click a cell in the Underlying column.

2. Choose Custom Category.

3. Review/edit the mapping in the popup and save as prompted.

Account Settings

Views: By Master, By Portfolio

1. Right-click a cell in the Portfolio column.

2. Choose Account Settings.

3. Review overlay / account settings in the popup.

If the wrong column is selected, Rival Risk prompts you to use Portfolio (Account Overlay) or Underlying (Custom Category).

> Screenshot: Context menu showing Account Settings on Portfolio.

Tips for working across views

- Same filters don’t always carry over when you switch hierarchies. Re-apply Quick filter or column filters after changing views.

- Frozen columns differ by view because the hierarchy width differs. Don’t be surprised if the frozen strip looks wider on By Master.

- Column definitions (what a measure means) are shared conceptually—see [Live View Column Definitions](#)—even when the row tree changes.

- Alerts from filters still open Alert Setup; confirm the alert’s account/product scope matches the view you intended.

Troubleshooting

| Symptom | What to try |

|---|---|

| I don’t see Office / Product controls | You are not on By Office |

| Custom Category is missing | Use By Master or By Portfolio, and right-click Underlying |

| Account Settings is missing | Use By Master or By Portfolio, and right-click Portfolio |

| Prompt about Portfolio vs Underlying | Right-click the column named in the message |

| Rows look “wrong” after switching views | Clear filters; remember the hierarchy changed, not necessarily the firm risk |

| Need two hierarchies at once | Enable open-in-new-tab and open a second view |

Quick reference

| View | Sidebar | Hierarchy | Unique toolbar / tools |

|---|---|---|---|

| By Office | By Office | Master / Account / Category | Office, Product, Update |

| By Master | By Master | Master Account / Trading Group / Portfolio | Custom Category, Account Settings |

| By Portfolio | By Portfolio | Trading Group / Portfolio / Underlying | Custom Category, Account Settings |

| By Symbol | By Symbol | Underlying / Expiry / OSI | Symbol-first drill-down |
