Chart Panel
The Chart Panel (titled Distribution Charts in the UI) turns the rows currently shown in a Market Risk grid into a visual distribution. Use it to spot outliers, compare books, and see how a risk or PnL metric is spread across accounts or groups—without leaving the page.
Available on all Market Risk views: By Portfolio, By Symbol, By Master, and By Office.

Open and close the panel
1. Open any Market Risk view and wait until the grid has loaded.
2. In the page header toolbar, click the chart icon (tooltip: Toggle chart panel).
3. A side panel opens on the right titled Distribution Charts. The grid narrows to make room.
4. Click the chart icon again, or the X in the panel header, to close it.

When the panel is open, the toggle button appears in the primary (active) style so you can see at a glance that charts are on.
What the chart uses
Charts are built from the grid data currently on screen (the rows and columns the server has sent for this view).
- Change the hierarchy level, filters, office/category selections, or page (where paging exists), and the chart updates to match the new set of rows.
- Aggregate / rollup labels such as +ALL, ALL, and Portfolio are excluded so firm-wide totals do not dominate the plot.
- If there is no usable numeric data for the selected columns, the panel shows No data available for selected columns.
> Tip: Filter or drill the grid first (for example, one office or a set of symbols), then open the chart so the distribution reflects the slice you care about.
Controls
At the top of the panel:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Account / Group | Which identity column labels each point or bar (frozen hierarchy columns, or columns whose names include Account, Trading Group, or Group). Defaults to the first available. |
| Metric | Which numeric risk/PnL column to plot (for example Final MM, Vega, Net Delta). Defaults to the first numeric metric. |
| Chart Type | Scatter Plot (Best for Outliers) (default), Histogram, or Bar Chart. |
If Account/Group or Metric cannot be selected, the panel prompts you to choose both before drawing a chart.

Chart types
Scatter Plot (default)
- One point per row value: X = account/group, Y = metric.
- Outliers are highlighted in the error/alert color using the IQR method (values outside Q1 − 1.5×IQR or Q3 + 1.5×IQR).
- Hover a point for account name, value, and an outlier flag when applicable.
- A legend line under the chart reports how many outliers were detected.
Best for: finding books or symbols that sit far from the pack on a single metric.
Histogram
- Shows how often metric values fall into bins (frequency on the Y-axis).
- Binning adapts to the data (including separate outlier bins for values outside roughly the central 95%). Outlier bins use the error color.
- Hover a bin for range, count, and the list of accounts in that bin.
- Click a bin to filter the All Accounts Summary list to those accounts; click again or use Clear Filter to show everyone.
Best for: shape of the distribution (clustered, skewed, heavy tails).
Bar Chart
- One bar per account/group showing the average of the selected metric for that label.
- Hover for average and count of values.
- A zero reference line helps read positive vs negative averages.
Best for: quick rank-style comparison of average exposure or PnL by book.
Summary strip
Above the plot you will see:
- {Metric} Distribution (and (Zoomed) when zoomed)
- All Accounts (N values across M accounts)
- Min | Max | Mean for the selected metric across plotted values
- Short zoom hints (scroll, drag, keys)
- Outlier notes for scatter or histogram when relevant
Below the plot, All Accounts Summary lists each account/group with Count, Mean, and Range (min–max). Use histogram bin click + Clear Filter to focus that list.
Zoom and pan
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Mouse wheel over the chart | Zoom toward the cursor |
| + / − buttons (or + / = / - keys when the chart is focused) | Zoom in / out |
| Drag (after zooming) | Pan the view |
| Double-click chart, Reset Zoom, or 0 / Escape | Return to the full view |
Zoom resets when you change Chart Type.

Typical workflows
1. Find the noisy book — Open By Office or By Portfolio → filter if needed → Chart → Metric = Final MM (or your desk’s main PnL) → Scatter Plot → inspect red outlier points.
2. See the shape of risk — Same setup → Histogram → note outlier bins → click a tail bin → review accounts in the summary.
3. Compare average Greek — Drill to the level you care about → Metric = Vega (or Net Delta) → Bar Chart → scan tallest / most negative bars.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| Panel empty / “No data available” | Wait for Connected and grid load; pick a numeric Metric; expand the hierarchy so leaf rows have values. |
| Too few points | Clear filters or drill less aggressively; ensure you are not only looking at aggregate rows. |
| Wrong labels on X-axis | Change Account / Group to the frozen column that matches your view (Office, Master, Portfolio, Symbol, etc.). |
| Grid feels cramped | Close the panel with X or the chart toggle. |
| Chart looks stale | Filters and hierarchy drive the data—refresh the slice in the grid; the chart follows those rows. |
